What?! Gaiking, too?!

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-10-10/shout-factory-to-release-gaiking-anime-on-dvd

First Mazinger Z is licensed, now the original Gaiking from 1976, too?  Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming!  This time, "Shout! Factory" has licensed Gaiking.  This is starting to look great for super robot fans everywhere.  It did say in the news post that it's going to be released "abridged"... whatever that supposed to mean.

I guess we'll have to wait and see for now.  But anyway... let's hope more super robot anime from the past will soon be licensed, too!

  1. Toei Animation hired William Winckler Productions a few years ago to make a series of English dubbed compilation films of some of their classic properties, including Starzinger, Captain Harlock, Gaiking, Danguard Ace, Hokuto no Ken, LunLun the Flower Angel and GeGeGe no Kitaro (not sure which series, but probably the fourth or fifth). These were initially only intended for release in Japan, but I figured it wouldn't be surprising if some of them showed up in the USA eventually.

So this Gaiking announcement isn't about a subtitled release of uncut episodes (ala Mazinger Z and Cutie Honey). It's an English dubbed only release of three feature length compilation movies that summarize some of the main story arcs of the series (that's what they mean by "abridged").

  2. Well, let's hope that even with an abridged release they'll eventually see the wisdom of releasing a complete subbed version for the purist fans too.
(Maybe Discotek needs to receive some e-mails to hear our collective voice that they're heading in the right direction.)
